The Bible Tells Me So

Karl Barth was a German theologian who died back in 1968. He went on numerous speaking tours during his distinguished career. One of those tours took place in the United States in 1962. Sometimes after speaking the professor would take questions from the audience. During one particular Q&A session at the University of Chicago, a seminary student asked him if he could sum up all his many years of theological studies in one sentence. Barth replied, “Why, yes I can. In the words of a song I learned at my mother’s knee. Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

How do we know Jesus loves us? The Bible tells us so.

How do we know Jesus died for us? The Bible tells us so.

How do we know Jesus rose from the grave? The Bible tells us so.

How do we know what Jesus asks of us? The Bible tells us so.

The Bible is true. It is the supreme rule of faith and life for God’s people.

The Bible is the only divinely authorized literary instrument whereby God communicates Christ and covenant to His people at all times and in all places.
“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” (Ps. 119:160) “…your word is truth.” (John 17:17)il_214x170-1002176404_6yyt
