As we prepare for the beginning of another school year, we are reminded of the vital role that families, parents, Christians, and students play in the educational process. In today’s society, knowledge is power. A strong education equips our young people not only with discernment but also with the opportunity to pursue their spiritual growth. As Proverbs 4:7reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
Education opens doors—to careers, and a better future—but it must never lead us away from our faith in Christ. Our academic growth should go hand-in-hand with spiritual maturity. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” This transformation comes when we align what we learn with the truth of God’s Word.
Let us also remember to support our educators. Hebrews 13:16 tells us, “But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Encouraging teachers, volunteering, and praying for our schools are ways we can be a light.
My parents always said, “Your education is something that cannot be taken from you,” and that’s true. But more importantly, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”(Proverbs 1:7). Let’s help our students grow in both truth and wisdom as they begin a new year with expectations from the God, and not the world around them.
The way we educate our young people is changing by the minute in relation to technology and the ways in which students and teachers participate in the instructional and the learning process. But may we remember when it comes to education:
1. True knowledge and wisdom come from fearing the Lord and realizing He is the One who makes us wise.
2. While seeking ways to help the next generation become “learned,” may we not do this at the cost of resembling the world.
3. Knowledge and wisdom begin when we seek righteousness.
Regardless of what your role is (parent, child/student, relative of a school-aged child, an employee in a local school district, a church member), we all are stakeholders! Please pray for our students, staff, and community; and get involved in the life of someone who is returning to school by walking with them and checking on them. We have yet another school year filled with opportunities!
