How To Build Others Up

How do we go about fulfilling this divine command? We know others need it. We know we need it. What are we to do?

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thess. 5:11)

1. We must know and share the Word of God.

• The Word of God not only saves (James 1:21: Rom. 1:16), it comforts (1 Thess. 4:18) and gives hope (Rom. 15:4).

2. We must be intentional about and careful with the words we speak.

• What we say and how we say it will have a profound impact on others (Eph. 4:29).

3. We must engage in heart-felt, divinely authorized worship.

• As we pray together…sing together…open the Word of God and meditate upon it together…commune in the Lord’s Supper…we are built up! (cf. 1 Cor. 14:4, 12, 26)

4. We must faithfully live our lives for Jesus Christ.

• Hearing about the faithfulness of others builds us up and gives us joy (Eph. 1:15; 3 John 4).
