One More Day

If you listened to mainstream country music in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, you are familiar with the group Diamond Rio. One of their biggest hits is entitled, “One More Day.” The song was written by Bobby Tomberlin and Steven Dale Jones . The content of the song is based on the narrator having a dream that a wish was granted to him. He talks about how he didn’t wish for any extravagant gifts like a “mansion in Malibu”, he only wished for one more day with someone he loved very much. On some level, we all can relate to the idea of this song. For me, I wish I could have “one more day” with my dad. But, we all know that if we all had “one more day” with someone we missed after they had passed away, we would only want more time with them and we would not want to let them go! Or as the song says, “I would pray for time to crawl.”

What can we do to fill the void of the one or ones we have lost the love of on earth for a little while? Focus on Heaven….

  1. Heaven is real– Jesus says in John 14:1-6, He has a place prepared for us!
  2. Remember Heaven is place of rest for the weary– We are reminded in Revelation 21:1-4, in Heaven, tears, pain, death, & sorrow do not exist!
  3. Heaven is a place for the weary laborer– Hebrews 4:9-11 tells us we are “to be diligent to enter that rest!”
  4. Heaven is a place of Godly, righteous people– God is with His people, Revelation 21:3.
  5. Heaven will last forever– we will be with the Lord forever, I Thessalonians 4:17. Yesterday, I was close to the cemetery where most of my immediate is family is buried. I drove there

by myself. It was a beautiful, quiet, and peaceful few minutes. The cemetery is out in the country surrounded by beautiful farmland. As I looked at headstones of my family, I thought, “If only I had one more day with you.” It simply would not be enough, we know that. You feel the same as you miss your loved ones. I looked on my grandfather’s headstone. He buried his wife in 1939 and lived without her until November of 1980. I’m certain as he was left with the responsibility of raising 7 children, he wished he had “one more day” with my grandmother. On the headstone are these words, “To Them We Trust A Place Is Given Among The Saints, With Christ, In Heaven.” He was thinking about Heaven and being reunited with his wife.

Friends and family, as we hurt, suffer, and yearn for rest and reunification with those who have gone on, may we focus on Heaven and our desire to be there and remember, we can go to Heaven if we read, follow, and obey the words of Jesus; John 12:47-48, “And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.”

One more day…wouldn’t it be nice? But, let’s grow our faith, walk with Christ, and seek Him every- day so one day, we will be prepared for Judgement Day. Then, we will never have to worry about one more day ever again!
